WATER TESTING

Setting up a new aquarium or just having trouble with water quality?  Bring a sample of your aquarium water in to have the levels checked for PH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate, General Hardness, Carbonate Hardness, Copper or Calcium.  Each test is $1.00.

   

WING CLIPPING

A bird’s flight feathers can be trimmed to prevent the bird’s ability to obtain uplift when flying.  This eliminates the hazard of your bird flying away when taken outside or if the door or window is accidentally left open.

A bird with clipped wings can, however, still manage short flying hops and will cover a fair bit of ground if not discovered quickly.  Clipping a bird’s wings does not hurt the bird and is recommended for young birds, birds being finger trained and birds with behavioral problems.  The flight feathers will grow back on an average of 3 months and can be trimmed on a regular basis.  Wing trims are $5.00.  Please call for an appointment.

   

NAIL CLIPPING

A bird’s nails should be trimmed regularly to prevent the nails from curling and breaking, and to make the experience of holding your bird comfortable for you.  Untrimmed nails cause the quick to extend farther down into the nail and can cause bleeding when trying to get the nails back under control.  Regular trims are recommended.  When the bird’s nails feel sharp on your skin, it’s time!    Nail trims are $5.00.   Please call for an appointment.

   

GENDER SEXING

In some species of birds, the male and female are easily distinguished by  certain characteristics such as size, markings, behavior or coloration.

The gender of other birds can be more difficult to determine.  While some people claim they can tell the gender of a bird by feeling the pelvic area or blowing on the feathers near the vent to see a specific body part, the most reliable way to sex these birds is through DNA testing.

Fins & Feathers will clip a nail on your bird to obtain a blood sample and send this sample to our lab for definitive testing.  The results are guaranteed 99.99% accurate and are available usually within 10 days.  The results come in the form of a mailed certificate and this information is especially valuable to you if you wish to breed or sell your bird or have your bird micro-chipped.

ANIMAL BOARDING

Fins & Feathers offers boarding for your pet while you get away for that well deserved vacation.  We can accommodate birds, large and small (you provide their cage and diet), rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice or rats (you provide their cage and diet), amphibians and reptiles (some size limitations, you provide their housing and purchase what they consume during their stay).  Boarding is $5.00 per day.

Fish bowl boarding is $2.00 per day.   Please call in advance.

   

SELF-SERVE DOG WASH

Have we got a deal for you!  Bring in that dog, put him/her in our tub, we supply the shampoo, the towels, an apron for you and we clean up the mess!   Just $9.99 for a small dog up to 20 lbs., $11.99 for dogs up to 40 lbs., and larger dogs just $13.99.  Please call for an appointment.

   

SPECIAL ORDERS

If you can’t find what you’re looking for and you don’t see it on our shelves, chances are we can get it within the week, sometimes just a day or two.  Most of our suppliers are local and we have the ability to walk in and buy what we need on the spot.  We are happy to pass this good fortune on to you and we will accommodate you as best we can.  All special orders must be pre-paid and are non-refundable (unless manufacturally defective).

Fins & Feathers offers gift certificates for any dollar amount, year round.  Of course, for the holidays they come on groovy Christmas paper.  Credit can be carried over from purchases less than the face value.   No cash back for unused balances.
